My belief is that a lot of feeling comfortable at the catch comes from spending time at the catch. So my biggest recommendation to people is to get in the habit of always starting - when you're at a dead stop - from the catch. If you can't yet sit at the catch with the blades squared and buried, start with the blades feathered on the water. Hope that helps.

What a crock of shit. All of these analyst trying to analyze crap that just isn't there. The sad part is that this is a virus spreading to today's rowing arena with the same affect: analyzing shit that just isn't there ultimately for the sole purpose to promote your school or business. All about money. You want to tell me that any of the athlets coming to the Olympics, they don't know how to row effectively? The same people that have thousands of hours, thousands of dollars in equipment, trainers, facility, nutritionists go to Olympics with problems? Bullshit. One thing for sure if you look at the video beginning: Ozzies stroke rate was higher then everyone else's.

Glad you found the video handy 😄 Just remember that once the hands are offset, they stay that way throughout the stroke. In order to go straight, you need to have both oars going through the same length arc on the drive. Good luck!

Hope it has helped you. Make sure your blades are partly out of the water before you feather so that you're not feathering underwater. Also try not to feather as you're still on the drive, make the feather the beginning of the recovery, not the end of the drive. Good luck!

I had been rowing for a few years before I flipped it. And it was due to stupidity: my oar lock wasn't tightened enough. The oar popped out, and I was over in a flash. I had never practiced this maneuver before but knew enough to get the oars wrangled in first. FYI, there is a pair of almost new Oakleys at the bottom of Stoney Creek Lake.

We use port, starboard, bow, stern so that there is no confusion. When you say "right", am I referring to the boats right or your right? If I say port or starboard, there's no question.
